It’s been more that two years since my EVS experience had started. Sometimes my mind is still reminiscing those days and their impact on me. The places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, my time away from home are always in the back of my mind.  Romania and England were the places where I each spent a full year, contributing as a teacher and photographer, while at the same time finding time to travel and explore more places. With my suitcase full of memories and my hard disk full of photos I really wanted to share with other people.

This month we had the pleasure of doing things a little differently with the podcast! We went along to the EuroPeers International Social event and recorded a “round table” style episode with EuroPeers from across Europe. Coincidentally, most of the guests who joined us were from the recently formed EuroPeers Italy, so we can’t quite say we were representing the entire continent! They did however represent a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, and…

It’s long been a dream of mine to bring together people’s stories of international adventure. International experiences like our guests are describing can have such a huge impact on a person’s growth and development, and genuinely change lives. Of course, taking a year out to bum around the mountain tops is not viable for everyone, but a week-long project, however… The effect on a person can still be enormous.

I would just like to say thank you to each and every one of you who took part, watched, and shared. The event was really special for me as it truly captured the feeling of being on an international project, meeting new people, and sharing cultures – despite being through a screen! I would also like to say a big, big thank you to everyone I had the chance to work with to make the event possible – namely Olga, Ben, Ana, Edyta, Alexandra, and Emily. It was a genuine pleasure to work with you guys and I almost enjoyed some of the planning meetings as much as the event. A massive thank you goes to our digital and graphic facilitation team as well as to the Archimedes Foundation in Tallinn.

It is fair to say 2020 took many of us by surprise. Much has happened in a matter of months, which has toyed with our emotions like ping pong, and shaped our behaviour (through fear-mongering, hope, education, or a new law passing). If you are reading this then you have lived through some major incidents, which will be studied in years to come.

The UK Parliament All-Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs (APPG) has recently published a highly significant report on the future of youth work. At the same time, the government has announced the development of a “Youth Charter” to support young people “over the next generation and beyond”. At a time when youth services have been severely cut and when youth workers are under unprecedented pressure, it is encouraging to know that there are new initiatives which could re-establish the importance of youth work as a form of non-formal education, instead of just a crisis response to social and security issues. There is widespread political support for new policy and funding ideas for the youth sector.

Students at the start were really moved by their testimony especially Ema’s testimony taking into account how much her volunteering experience influenced her life, I believe this made the students feel more comfortable but also it helped them relate to their story.

What is the peer idea? Learned about European Solidarity Corps and other programmes, to become European story-tellers and how to promote events, increase visibility, and implementation of their own projects (presentation skills, project management, graphic facilitation skills, etc.)
